Wage row erupts among Mauritanian UN peacekeepers in CAR

Mauritanian President Mohamed Ould Abdel Aziz has stepped in to quell discontent among some of the country’s soldiers serving under the United Nations mission in the Central African Republic following a row in their allowances.

Reports claim that more than a dozen Gendarmerie had protested demanding better terms in their pay including air tickets for their holiday back in Mauritania.

Mauritanian soldiers joined the UN mission in the Central African Republic (MINUSCA) on January 12.

The country’s information agency reports that it has a 750-strong battalion in the Central African Republic.

MINUSCA currently has 12,000 soldiers who were deployed to CAR to maintain order after the country was torn by sectarian violence.
